 Legal Process Outsourcing Services

The LPO segment is poised to cross $6 billion by 2010 and touch $15-$20 billion by 2015. LPO customers include legal departments of multinationals, international law firms, universities, legal publishing and legal research enterprises.

It is estimated that at present there are approximately 1200 professionals working with around 50 LPOs operating from India. LPO in India may be headed for consolidation in its attempt to reposition in the knowledge value chain. There are a little over 60 companies in the LPO space but only handfuls are actually imparting high-end value services.

Why Outsource

Review of outsourcing options is most often triggered by the desire for cost reduction. Although the lure of potential cost savings and operational efficiency is a powerful siren, outsourcing can offer numerous other benefits that further important business goals:

  • India, like the US, is a common-law jurisdiction rooted in the British legal tradition
  • Indian legal training is conducted solely in English;
  • Appellate and Supreme Court proceedings in India take place exclusively in English
  • Indian legal opinions are written exclusively in English
  • Due to the time-zone differences, nighttime in the US is daytime in India, which means that the clients' projects get 24-hour attention, and some projects can be completed overnight!
  • Significant increase in capabilities
  • Revenue increase
  • Reduced acquisition costs
  • Significant opportunity gains
  • Reduced insurance premiums
  • Reduced vendor and law firm bills
  • IP commercialization enabled
  • Enabling of legal department metrics
  • Reduced patent and maintenance fees
  • Better product development planning
